I just read a BBC news article about a politician, Shoichi Nakagawa, who declared the American bombing of Nagasaki illegal.
Shoichi Nakagawa is the policy chief of the governing party, and is a right-winger. It’s usually from the Japanese right-wing that you frequently hear these sort of statements. (The worst case of Japanese far-right are the black vans blaring nationalistic messages and flying the Japanese war flag) His speech was aimed at rallying support for his call to arm Japan with nuclear weapons. Mr. Nakagawa is in need of a vacation, because he’s not thinking clearly.
First off, I don’t support the use of nuclear weapons. I’m scared of them. (Especially considering where I live) But, Mr. Nakagawa mentions America’s use of the atomic bomb as a crime, yet he doesn’t mention Japan’s bombing of Pearl Harbor or the atrocities in China and Korea. There are no excuses for any of the actions of either country, but none of the events should be ignored. Even in America, the debate on whether an atomic bomb was necessary is still ongoing. It’s not like Americans gather around and discuss how great of a decision it was to use the weapon. Hell, America didn’t even want to enter the war. The country was formally invited with a squadron of planes bombing its ships and civilians. This is just a minor point.
The main point is the message he delivers, and the purpose he carries. He is addressing citizens of Japan about the horrors that come with nuclear weapons, while trying to convince them that that is the reason that Japan should arm up with them. It seems so contradictory.
Generally, this sort of topic has very little impact on my life, though. It just amused me.

I read articles too. Allen Iverson just got traded from Philly to Denver. I believe a topic like this has much more impact on our lives directly and on the world as a whole. Nuclear bombs might be devastating weapons, but not nearly as devastating as a double crossover destroying the pride of the closest defender.

I agree. It’s illegal to drop bombs during wars.

Claytonian: Also, I think the American forces invaded Japan without proper visas in their passports, so this might actually be an issue for the immigration bureau.
Heath: Didn’t Iverson quit? Basketball is the one with the orange ball, right?

No no no, it’s the one with the ball that flies in the air and you chase it on boomsticks and what not.

It’s FOUR balls that fly around! So, is Iverson a beater?
Oh, you just reminded me. The new Harry Potter film is this summer, hey? And Spiderman in May? It’ll be a big year for movies. And, hopefully the final Potter book comes out. I can’t wait. I want to start reading Harry Potter to Lani when she’s 3 or 4.
