New Radiohead Album “In Rainbows” Brief Review

I got the new Radiohead album In Rainbows earlier today, and to be honest I was disappointed at first listen. (Go to radiohead.com to get the album for the cost of your choosing.)

I consider “Faust Arp” the best track off the album. Have a listen:

The album is very different from all of their previous releases. It’s got a distinctly cleaner and more digital feel to it, but I was a fan of the “raw” Radiohead. It felt more personal. Amnesiac is still my favorite Radiohead album, followed by Kid A.

In Rainbows has a lot of repetition, giving the album more of a pop vibe, and it borrows a lot from Thom Yorke’s solo album The Eraser. I don’t know if I’ll like this album or not in the long run. I’ll have to listen to it through a few more times. I do know that it’s good as background music; songs that you don’t really need to focus on.

My ranking of Radiohead albums, #1 being the top:
1. Amnesiac
2. Kid A
3. OK Computer
4. Hail to the Thief
5. In Rainbows
6. The Bends
7. Pablo Honey

  • well at least it’s free if you want it to be, right?

  • Can’t always top yourself, I guess. It’s rough once you’ve made a hit. There are 2 failure options at that point: make the same song for the rest of your career (a la Creed), or branch off and make something that’s not in the same ballpark as your other work. Just the way of things, I suppose.

  • Hey Alex

it’s been a long time since I read through your blog…my apologies. Funny thing was I was away on holiday in Bermuda & visiting my brother there when his son returned from South Korea. He had a few stories about the DMZ is it? This jogged my memory of you…!

I downloaded the album also & am defering my opinion just now until I have played it some more.

    DM.

  • Yeah, DMZ between South and North Korea. I haven’t been there myself, but Deas (above) has.

I’m sure you saw that I wrote an update to my initial opinion of the album. It grows on you.
