Who’s your favorite character in The Office?
The Office. Is anyone else out there in the world watching the U.S. version of The Office? The original U.K. version was great, and the first season of the U.S. version was a tragedy, but everyone seems to have found who their character is, and the show has really pulled together nicely.
Besides Jim or Pam, since they’re generally supposed to be the characters with whom you identify, who is your favorite Dunder Mifflin employee?
Mine’s Creed. The guy is nuts. In a good way.
“Bankruptcy, Michael, is nature’s do-over.”
“The only difference between me and a homeless man is this job. I will do whatever it takes to survive…like I did when I was a homeless man.”
Karen: You can’t give paper clips to a baby. He might swallow them.
Creed: Oh it’s ok, I’ve got tons of them.
Eun Hye’s favorite character is Dwight.

Well, she’s not actually my favorite, but Kelly has some amazing quotes…
MICHAEL: Kelly, you’re a Hindu, so you believe in Buddha.
KELLY: That’s Buddhists.
MICHAEL: Are you sure?
KELLY: No.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
KELLY: I never really thought about death until Princess Diana died. That was the saddest funeral ever. [thinks about it] That and my sister’s.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(upon Jim’s return to the Scranton office)
KELLY: Jim!!! Oh my god, I have so much to tell you. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes had a baby, and they named it Suri! And Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie also had a baby, and they named it Shiloh! And both babies are amaziiiing!
JIM: Wow, so, uh, what’s new with you?
KELLY: [blank stare] I just told you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
KELLY: Who’s Bob Hope?
MICHAEL: He’s a comedian.
KELLY: Oh, like Amanda Bynes.
I have yet to get to see an episode of the American Office, but am a huge fan of the UK version.
David:
“There are limits to my comedy. There are things that I’ll never laugh at. The handicapped. Because there’s nothing funny about them. Or any deformity. It’s like when you see someone look at a little handicapped and go ‘ooh, look at him, he’s not able-bodied. I am, I’m prejudiced.’ Yeah, well, at least the little handicapped fella is able-minded. Unless he’s not, it’s difficult to tell with the wheelchair ones.”
Dawn: What I find amusing is that in the relationship between Kelly and Ryan, Kelly was the only annoying person. Now that Ryan has made the big leagues, he’s just a sleaze bag. Plus everything that Jim had or could have, Ryan gets second dibs on, from women to staff positions.
Nic: You should really watch the U.S. version. The first season was really nothing to write home about, though. Actually, it was a shabby attempt at a near replication of the UK version, which made it awkward because the actors didn’t “fit” the characters. In the second season things pick up. I promise. My wife had doubts about it all from the beginning, but she’s a certified The Office addict now.
Hold the phone - your wife is addicted to The Office? Do you get those subbed from somewhere, or does she understand enough English to get the comedy? (That’s a pretty high level of cultural and linguistic fluency in my opinion.) Thought you were doing Heroes or some other show with subs. Just being curious. She should totally write a guest entry sometime. Especially if it’s about your daughter - hahaha. Anyhoo.
We have Korean subtitles running on all of the shows we watch. There are enough fans of US TV shows in Korea that there seems to be a huge subtitling community on the internet. There’s no way she could digest an episode without subtitles. We tried it once, and it was me pausing the video every 30 seconds to explain what was going on and why I was laughing.
We watch The Office, Lost, Heroes, Smallville, Medium, and 24. The Office seems to be her new favorite. Actually, all of those shows except for The Office, are broadcast here on Korean TV channels a couple of months behind the US broadcast dates. We get our TV shows much earlier than that, though. About a day or two after the original air date in the States, to be exact.
I tried to get her to write an entry in Japanese once and she shied away from it. I gave up. She does read the blog once every two or three days, though. Hi honey!
You know my friend got me watching it as a part of a deal, and the show really stuck. I still remember when you and Colin talked about when we were hanging out in FH. I think the underrated character is Stanley. Just that look on his face and the way he says those 3 lines that he averages per episode is genius.
