A little bit about the man behind the curtain

For lack of anything really interesting to write about at the minute, I’ll write 8 factoids about myself since it has been demanded of me by Deas. I should warn you, though, that on the Japanese magnitude scale of “interesting” I register at “not very”. Most people don’t read these things, anyways.

1. As a young lad, I wanted to be an engineer. This continued into high school, at which point I became interested in computer science, which lead to my enrollment at UCSB as a comp sci major, which I ditched after the first quarter for East Asian Cultural Studies with emphasis in Japanese.

2. I have a very animal instinct about food. I don’t like people taking my food. This may come off as selfish, but I really don’t mind buying more food for other people if they want to eat it. If I buy 6 chicken nuggets for myself, I’m eating 6 chicken nuggets.

3. I’m very interested in the idea of an Imposter Syndrome.

4. I want to know everything, which I consider one of my major weaknesses. (Because it’s just not possible, and it distracts me from mastering anything.)

5. I believe that everyone has a story to tell, but I also believe that most people lack the capacity to tell it well.

6. I yearn for you tragically to speed-read, but I can’t. Yet.

7. The only book I would need if stranded on a desert island is Catch-22. Kudos to you if you already guessed that after reading #6.

8. I’m annoyed by people who are a part of a subculture just for the sake of being part of a subculture.

Thanks for reading through it all. I’m not going to target specific people to pass this meme on to, but if you read this and want to write your own, please do so and just link back to this entry.

  • Interesting read! I should write up one of my own, but I also place myself soundly in the “normal / boring” category.

  • #2 clearly came from your Food Nazi of a Mother!

  • Amen to 3, 4, 5, and 8. I understand you completely on those points.

  • Hey shazzbot, thanks for stopping by (and reading a meme, of all things).

I look forward to hearing more from you on Japan Probe.

  • Of course! The quirks of our lives, as you alluded to in number 5, seem to be ignored by most people. Maybe its because that majority just haven’t tried hard enough, but either way I love it when people pull these kind of observations from the grey patches of their consciousness. The best part of the story is always found in our quirks. Thanks for sharing them.

Your factoids were the impetus for starting up my own blog dealidoo. So I give a hearty “hell yeah!” to the power of memes!

  • I’ll add it on to my blogroll. It’s a good way to document your experience in a foreign land.

  • Excellent! Though it doesn’t mean much, I’ll do likewise.
