Who’s making news in Japan?
Rockinginhakata.com’s Deas hit a little bit on the issue of balanced coverage in Japanese media of the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election a couple of weeks ago, and it sparked my curiosity.
I ran each name of the three major candidates through Japanese news sites to see how many hits they came out [...]

Balanced News Coverage

Shaken, not stirred.
The first tremors began to hit around 12:30 am, just as I was about to go to sleep last night. The clinking sound of wine glasses was the first sign, then the rolling sensation. The first round lasted about 20 seconds.
Five minutes later came some more shaking. Not as big as the [...]

Rice in Japan
The solution to Japanese farmers’ bind of not selling any rice because of its high cost is simply to not grow any rice at all! With protectionist policies, they could make a fortune out of growing nothing!
“His specialty was alfalfa, and he made a good thing out of not growing any. The government [...]

Interesting bickering
My wife brought up an interesting point while we were talking about nationalism in Asia. I like hearing her take on things as she’s a Korean living in Japan studying alongside Chinese. She feels that, based on China’s long history of power in Asia, many Chinese today still consider Korea and Japan as [...]

And here I thought ‘irony’ was a foreign concept in China.
A protest to protest a protest.
Torch protests could hurt Japan’s ties with China
I might need to begin a protest of my own. A protest to protest the protest of a protest. All I would ask of you, dear readers, is that you kindly protest me afterwards. A protest to protest the protest [...]

The new ride
Got my Japanese license. It took 3 hours of paperwork and explanations of my driving history in California and Korea, an eye exam, a picture, and ¥4000 (about $40 USD). There were no written or driving tests because of the exchange agreement between Korea and Japan, and I was lucky enough to have [...]

Back on the manifest
Victory Manual!!!(?)!
I’ve got a list to make of black eyes and feathers in my cap. Sometimes, the feathers in my cap turn out to be black eyes, but I’d prefer it the other way around.
I’ve got a hankering for some Mister Donut coffee before I head in to the ol’ 9 to 5 (or [...]

We found a place
Dear friends and family,
We’re back (in Japan). We found a place and move in this Saturday. I’ll post pictures when we fill it with furniture. (It’s 3 bedrooms, the bath and toilet are separate, has a decently sized dining-kitchen where we can actually put a dining table, and it’s about a 3 [...]

Out of Service
The Victory Manual will be out of service for a while (possibly up to a month!) as we’re moving back to Japan tomorrow and it’ll take a bit to get settled in. (Finding an apartment, buying a new computer [*hee hee hee*] and getting internet service up and running)
いよいよ出発!
(Finally, we depart!)

Personal experience can be misleading
Personal experience, especially when it’s limited, can lead a person to a counterfactual conclusion. This is true in all areas of life, and particularly true for people living in a foreign culture.
In my own social involvement within the foreign community of bloggers (and commenters) who live in Japan, I’ve read countless overgeneralizations, downright stereotypes, [...]
